Dr Kirsten Nielsen

Kirsten Nielsen, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Minnesota. Research in the Nielsen laboratory focuses on understanding how the fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans causes disease in individuals with advanced AIDS and other immunocompromised populations. Studies utilize both mouse models as well as analysis of human clinical isolates and infections to define critical host-pathogen interactions that impact disease outcome. Research predominantly focuses on Cryptococcus titan cells, CD4+ T-cell mediated immune responses, and how genetic and genomic changes in Cryptococcus impact human disease outcome.

Area of Research: Cryptococcus neoformans pathogenesis
